Mazda set to launch new CX-80 seven-seat SUV

Mazda is muscling-in on the seven-seat SUV market by launching this, the CX-80, in the autumn of 2024.

The CX-80 will head straight to the top of the Mazda family tree as its new flagship vehicle.

And it also sees Mazda offering its first proper seven-seater since it discontinued the Mazda5 MPV back in 2016.

Interestingly, the new CX-80 will be available with either a petrol plug-in hybrid powertrain or a six-cylinder diesel unit.

That’s worth noting, particularly as Volvo recently announced it has built its last ever diesel car. Mazda is still seemingly committed to that fuel, for the time being.

Those two engines are actually the same as you currently get with the smaller Mazda CX-60 - being the ‘Skyactiv-G’ 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery, or the 254 PS 3.3-litre ‘e-Skyactiv D’ diesel engine.

All-wheel drive comes as standard with the CX-80 no matter which powertrain you choose.

While full UK spec will be announced further down the line, Mazda is promising tech like Amazon Alexa in-car voice control, which can adjust the music, air-conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda Motors UK, said: “The all-new Mazda CX-80 is our new flagship SUV, a car that sits at the very top of our range in the UK, it will offer a unique blend of space, practicality, luxury and stand-out design. It combines progressive design anchored in Japanese aesthetics with outstanding on-board accommodation that delivers quality, style, flexibility and superior technology, all combined with the signature driving performance delivered by every Mazda.”

The Mazda CX-80 will be priced from £48,920 to purchase outright, and we’ll bring you leasing costs as they arrive.

The CX-80 will have to trade blows with some major competitors, including the likes of the Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento, and the recently updated Hyundai Santa Fe.
